CHARACTER PROFILE: WING PLAYER: Fox Lee (http://foxlee.arts-eclectic.com) NAME: Wing. If he has any other names, he's not aware of them. AGE: Eighteen years, literally. He aged as an elf until he was twelve, but, since then, has aged like a human. Mentally, he's about fifteen. RACE: Wing was born an elf; however, as explained in his backstory, he's also part air-elemental, which has altered him somewhat. HEIGHT: 5'03" WEIGHT: Comparable to a large, feather-stuffed pillow. EYES: A gradient from deep through light blue, with no apparent pupils. HAIR: Snowy white, with vague blue tinges at the tips of each feather. No, that's not a misprint - Wing's hair is indeed made up of light, fluffy feathers (even his eyebrows and eyelashes are very fine feathers). Individual feathers get bigger and longer toward the ends, which hang around the boy's waist. Two large feathers stick up at the top of his head, towards the front, where his 'hair' parts. SKIN: Very pale blue. It doesn't tan at all, and tends to go a pretty shade of mauve if he blushes. ODD FEATURES: Aside of what has already been mentioned (distinctive kid, isn't he?), Wing has several other unusual features - the most prominent is his second set of ears. Perched above his elven ears on both sides are what appear to be stylised (chibi, if you will) wings, growing with similar feathers to his hair, but in an pale artic blue sort of colour. They tend to flap a little when he's excited or happy, and perk up when he's listening to something closely, as do his elven ears. White marks, similar to these ear-wings, appear on his stomach, on either side of his navel. Looking very much like a stylised pair of wings, they are no more than an image, basically like a tattoo. Another sort of symbol, a sort of swirly line around a circle (just check the damn pictures XP), appears on his forehead. This mark always feels cool to the touch, and tends to become darker and more prominent when the weather around Wing is particularly windy. SPECIAL ABILITIES: A number of things gained through the elemental's influence; primarily, he has an affinity with all things avian, such as air-element magic, other air elementals and spirits, and flying creatures like birds and bats. His ear-wings give him the ability to understand the language of such creatures, though he doesn't have the physical make-up to /speak/ the language. Wing can manipulate the air currents around him with very little effort and great finesse, though not with much force - he can carry a light object to precisely the spot he wants, but the strongest he can manage is a quick gust. He can also use the feathers from his ear-wings to communicate with others, to a degree; by pulling out a feather (yes, it /is/ quite painful, and the feathers take weeks to grow back) and giving it to somebody else, he can sense thoughts or emotions, depending on the feather's location (placed behind the ear, the feather relays thoughts; over the heart, emotions). The feather can't make him a mind-reader, though; it can only pick up surface emotions and thoughts, or particularly powerful signals such as a strong aversion or sudden shock. Either way, the feather won't work at all if the subject isn't willing. Wing can predict weather patterns to a degree. He can sense the coming of rain hours before it hits, or tell you which way the wind is going to blow next time it changes. It's not a particularly useful ability, but some have been known to consult him before picnicking. Lastly, he's highly resistant to falling damage. In fact, if he falls more than a few feet, he tends to drift to the ground like a feather. SPECIAL WEAKNESSES: Fragility. Wing can be snapped like a twig by any heavily-applied force; even a single solid punch might break a bone. This is mostly because Wing's bones are actually hollow, like those of a bird or bat, so as to provide for flight (which he can't yet do, though it wouldn't surprise him if he eventually gained the ability to manifest wings). In short, physical combat for Wing is a no-no. Other weaknesses include a vulnerability to earth-based elemental attacks - he takes more damage from them, and negative effects tend to last longer - and a quite prominent phobia of being imprisoned or restrained (Wing is very paranoid about having his freedom). He also needs to spend a lot of time outdoors, and tends to fall sick if he isn't outside for at least a few hours each day (his condition will gradually return to normal if he spends a few whole days outside). He also doesn't have much control over his moods, given that they depend on the weather at the time (see personality section). And lastly - much to his chagrin - he goes through a half-yearly moult, which lasts for about three weeks. He tends to sulk when he's moulting. HOBBIES AND SKILLS: Wing's primary hobbies are painting - he uses watercolours by choice, usually choosing windblown landscapes as a subject - and dance, of the slow and graceful kind. He has an interest in music, though he seems rather incapable with anything but wind instruments and can't read sheet music to save his life (and thus does rather poorly in music class). He can sing quite nicely, though. As far as knowledge goes, Wing pales in comparison to most of the other students; he's never been good with facts and numbers, being a far more emotive type, and has little knowledge of history because of his somewhat detached upbringing. The sorts of things Wing knows are how to talk to somebody who's crying, how to calm a frightened animal, how to look past somebody's words and recognise what they're /really/ saying. He sucks on the book-smarts front, though. AREAS OF STUDY: Wing studies music, dance, art, agriculture, medicine, magical theory and (not his choice) history. He tends to get horrible grades, and can't seem to learn a damn thing from textbooks, but he usually does extremely well in practical exams - well enough to keep him in the school, at least. He seems to have an odd way of understanding things; he can easily grasp the concept behind a fact, but he seems to have problems with taking in the fact itself. BRIEF HISTORY: Wing was born in a small, close-knit and very religious elven community. The deity that this group devoted themselves to was known as Astrius, God of the Skies, a being who took the form of an beautiful, androgynous winged elf. It was not unheard of for a family of this town to be rewarded for their loyal worship by giving birth to a child who was "touched by Astrius" - which generally meant no more than having a natural aptitude for air-element magic and a particularly feminine beauty, though occasionally a touched child would develop wings when coming into adulthood. Wing was... an odd case. At birth he was a normal elf, if a slightly undersized one who appeared to be annoyingly scatter-brained. When he was twelve years old, however, he met with rather a big accident - the village being quite high-up, so as to be close to Astrius, Wing fell from one of the nearby cliffs. Although he managed to cling to life by the finest of threads, his body was broken beyond repair, and he had virtually no hope to survive. His parents - kind and loving individuals who adored their child with all of their hearts - found him in such a state, delirious with pain and shock, and carried him to the temple of Astrius in their village. They pleaded with the god to save their son, saying that they couldn't live without him - and, taking them quite literally, Astrius appeared to them, offering a simple choice: to buy Wing's life with their own. As suggested by Wing's continued existence, the couple accepted their deity's offer; and Astrius, to save the boy, called on one of her servants to merge with Wing, sharing life with him. The creature - an air elemental which called itself Novus - is the reason for Wing's odd aging process, physical features, and other supernatural quirks. Astrius was not oblivious to his cruelty in taking the boy's parents; in order to make it easier on the young elf, he erased Wing's memory of everything that had happened before his joining with Novus. Wing knows nothing of his parents or their sacrifice, and believes that he is simply an unusual case of a touched child, and an orphan raised by the village elder. PERSONALITY: Wing tends to be... well, a little feather-brained. Somewhat air-headed. A bit flighty. Always has his head in the - okay, I'll stop with the awful puns ^^;; The boy is generally a cheerful and easygoing type, quite friendly and always open to new people or ideas. Although he often has problems concentrating on lessons or study, and has a woefully short attention span, he never seems to forget his friends, and is as loyal as a well-fed puppy. He's a very emotive person, who operates on feelings rather than facts, and can't always explain why he believes what he does - however, he knows very well what he feels, and usually does exactly what it tells him to. Like most every teenager, Wing has mood swings. In his case, they are directly influenced by the weather around him; a sunny day makes him cheerful and bouncy, the buildup to a thunderstorm makes him pensive and moody, and the thunderstorm itself brings a great feeling of release and refreshment. Wing isn't very good at hiding his emotions, so he doesn't bother to; therefore, he can sometimes say things that he doesn't really mean during one of his moods, but usually gets over it very quickly, and expects others to take it just as lightly. On very rare occasions - usually in times of extreme emotional duress - the minds of Wing and Novus will separate, and one or the other will have complete control over Wing's body. When this happens, Wing's mind reverts back to the way that is was before Novus merged with him - basically, a child. He also gains back the portion of his memory that Astrius erased - though he forgets it once more when his mind goes back into synchronisation with Novus'. Usually, returning to the one mind is simply a matter of calming Wing down. AREAS OF MAGIC PRACTICED: Elemental - air. And while he's very skilled with it, thanks to his elemental side, Wing has absolutely no aptitude whatsoever for any other types of magic. He'd dearly like to gain some holy magic - hence his choice to study magical theory - but currently, he's woefully bad at it. REASON FOR ATTENDING: Two major factors; firstly when it was discovered that Wing's aging process had been altered so drastically, his guardian (afore-mentioned village elder) decided that he could no longer be at home amongst elves. Secondly, the fact that the boy was a little airheaded made his foster-father jump at the chance to get him a decent education.
